Of Course, You Did!

Stacy Sanchez

Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?” John 4:27 NIV

Have you ever received a text that made you want to cry? Not from sadness, but because you were so proud you couldn’t keep the emotions leaking from your eyes.

I got a text from one of my daughters-in-love, Brittany, that made me want to ugly cry:

Mom, this just happened. Today while leaving the library, I was wearing my favorite green, floral high-top shoes. Oliver pointed at an old, homeless woman crossing barefoot on the hot asphalt. Her feet were burning. She had sores and sunburns on her feet. I knew in that moment I couldn’t just walk by with the boys so worried about her. So, I went up to her and gave her my favorite shoes. Someone had stolen her only pair. She looked up almost crying. As we walked away Jackson asked, ‘Mom why did you do that?’ And I told him, ‘Love. People are more important than things.’”

I could hardly breathe reading this. The love my daughter-in-law exemplified and the lesson she taught her boys is priceless.

“Oh, my heart!” I responded. “That is precious! Of course, you did. You ooze Jesus. I love this. Your boys will never forget this moment.”

“Thank you for saying that, Mom. I hope they never forget to always give when they can. Nothing material is ever more important than a person.”

“Definitely! And who knows? She could have been an angel in disguise.”

Has anyone told you that you ooze Jesus? I think I want this to be engraved on my headstone: Stacy Sanchez: Awesome wife, THE best mother, and MOST amazing grandmother ever in the history of grandmothers! She oozed Jesus.

The older I get, I find myself weeping over the acts of goodness people perform. We know evil is alive and well and walking the face of the planet. We see it every day. Sadly, we expect it.

But Jesus’s acts of kindness were so commonplace that His disciples stopped asking why He did them.

John 4:27 says His disciples were surprised to see him speaking to a woman. That’s because the Jewish custom forbade a man and a woman to be alone together. Add the fact that she was a Samaritan—oy! That was even worse. But the disciples didn’t ask why he was talking to her. They knew Jesus was there to do Jesus things.

We’re put on this earth to do Jesus things, too. When the world looks at us, they should see Him through our actions. We may be the only representation of Jesus some people see. Our kindness should be such a typical part of our character that when others hear of it, they too, will say, “Of course she did.”

Do you ooze Jesus? I pray I do.

Lord Jesus, let our kindness and goodness be so prevalent that people won’t ask why we do them. They’ll know why.
